Cancer

The crisis of interpretation in incurable cancer. How do people interpret unexpected events that disrupt their lives? One way to deal with such an event is to try to explain it, resolve it, make it smaller, manage it … and just go on living. But often that is not enough. People then turn in on themselves. They realize what the consequences are, what they are going to lose, but at the same time it dawns on them how powerless they are. They have to let go of what they love. This tears them apart. Under this pressure they can suddenly see “the other” which they cannot reason out. Through an unusual experience. An enigmatic confluence…. Proximity. Or insight into the path of life.

Fascinated by the typical images from my own fever dream experiences, I decided to deepen myself in this topic. Through a survey of 150 people, conversations with a clinical psychologist and dream researcher I broadened my knowledge on the subject. In addition, many hours on the internet and a comprehensive literature review led to a more complete picture of the subject, the circumstances and the mental processes prior to a fever dream. I have tried to translate this information to images. Selected drawings have been exhibited in Groningen.
